About This Spot

Madhu Idiyappa Kadai offers a quietly unassuming yet deeply comforting experience tucked along busy El Camino Real in Santa Clara. This vegetarian spot feels like a gentle pause from the clamor of everyday life — a place where the hum of a modest food truck and the inviting aromas of South Indian cooking draw in locals and passersby alike. The pace here is unhurried, the atmosphere familiar and welcoming, painting a picture of thoughtful simplicity rather than flash.

Arriving at Madhu Idiyappa Kadai, you find yourself in a corner where tradition and ease meet. The seating, often modest and communal, encourages a shared experience grounded in genuine connection over food. There’s a certain warmth in the way the smells of freshly steamed idiyappam mingle with the sizzling notes of crispy masala vadai and the faint sweetness of coconut milk dishes, inviting you to explore a palette of textures and subtle spices that feel like home.

Behind the scenes, there is a care that speaks through every dish—whether it’s the delicate softness of appam served with coconut milk or the satisfying crunch of a spiced pakoda. The food here feels like a story slow-cooked and lovingly tended, drawing you into the rhythms of South Indian culinary traditions. It’s clear that every bite carries an intention to comfort and connect, while the quick, attentive service adds a layer of ease to the experience.

Madhu Idiyappa Kadai is exactly the kind of place where food isn’t just about nourishment but about rediscovering familiarity in the simplest acts—steaming dough, tempered spices, and shared moments around a humble meal. Its charm lies in welcoming both those who know these flavors well and newcomers curious to savor something authentic yet approachable.

The food was good. I particularly enjoyed the hot idiyappam and stew, as well as the aapam and coconut milk. The masala vada were large and delicious. However, the kuzhipaniyaram was bland and could benefit from some onions and chilies to add flavor. The stew was also a bit disappointing. Overall, the meal had a traditional taste. Service was quick.

It's a great find. We accidentally came across this food truck that's tucked in at the gas station on El Camino real where the Shan restaurant and lucky's is located. I've always had my pet peeves with truck food and have not had great experiences, but the food here was delicious, clean, and very authentic. We went there at around 330 PM or so, way past lunch and was not very hungry but decided to give it a try. We ordered the kuzhi paniyaram which was soft and fresh that was served with coconut chutney and idiyappam and kadala curry and ginger tea. He told us you can ask for more kadala curry if you run out. The idiyappam is made with red rice and kadala curry was mildly spiced. The tea can definitely be made better. But overall, a must try place for sure. You won't be disappointed...

The best Homer cooked style “Appam and Kadala Kari”. My partner order the idiyappam and stew which was good but the Appam and Kadala Kari is GOATED. Don’t forget to order a cup of their coconut milk very tasty!! Very yummy

Had the appam at Madhu Idiyappam Kadai and it was phenomenal. Soft, light, and tasted absolutely authentic. You can really tell it’s made with care. Highly recommend if you love good South Indian food.

We tried Madhu Idiyappa Kadai for a quaint gathering tonight. They were great to help us plan the quantity with the number of guest we had for dinner. They were also prompt (actually 10 mins early) in having the order ready for pickup. Food- Appetizer - Masala Vada and Gobi 65 were amazing - Fresh, crispy and we should have ordered more :) Entree - idiyappam was light and perfectly steamer and reminded me of my Amma's homemade ones. Kadala curry was a perfect combination with Appam and Idiappam as was the Stew ( I wish they made it more like Sri Lankan Style Sothi) Vegetable Briyani- was very well made as well and came with the perfect raita to round it off. Next time we will try the Puttu and Pakodas, and hopefully they will add more Jaffna style curries and dishes to their menu.

We had the best Diwali party with Madhu's live dosa counter at home. 20 varieties of dosas, filter coffee, banana bajji were all excellent. The setup was simple and did not take up much space. Madhu himself was amazing serving dosas with a smile and he clearly took pride in his service. The kicker was that he added the rava kesari (yummy!) to the menu without any additional cost! I would highly recommend his live dosa counter to anyone looking for amazing south Indian cuisine for their party. Thank you Madhu!

Madhu was the most cheerful guy. He served everyone with a warm smile and without any hesitation. It was a Dosa party. First of all he agreed to do it at a short notice. He came on time and he had to wait for us to get ready for him. Then he was serving the guests so cheerfully that everyone was enjoying the party. His food was very tasty and everyone had multiple helpings. The pineapple kesari, coconut sevai were very good and all the chutneys were fresh and mouth watering. He served a variety of dosas that everyone was trying

Taste was worth it. Must try. And good place for 10-11p. I think the service can be faster, atmosphere can be better, and prices are towards the high side. But food was so good, so I'd still give five stars. Good people and friendly. I had mysore masala dosa, and I'll definitely go again to try other items on the menu.
